We are delighted to announce the launch of our Ethernet First Mile (EFM) beta programme.

The EFM project is an upgrade to our existing Metro and Corporate SDSL service that we provide in the areas served by our unbundled exchanges. EFM uses two new technologies to achieve higher symmetric bandwidths than our existing SDSL service.

The first is G.SDHSL.bis - this is an update to the SDSL technology we use currently (G.SDHSL) which allows us to increase the maximum theoretical bandwidth per copper circuit up to 3Mbps (up from 2.3Mbps on SDSL). This will of course vary with distance from the exchange, and quality of the line available.

This leads neatly to the second - pair bonding. This allows us to take multiple G.SHDSL.bis lines and by joining them together we get one High Speed Link (HSL). Through joining multiple copper circuits, we are offering services of 5Mb and 10Mb to replace our SDSL Metro and Corporate services respectively, and provide a more reliable service as it is no longer reliant on just one copper pair.

With the advent of new converged services such as our OCS Unified Communication platform extending Lumison's existing VoIP services to include desktop video and application sharing, the timing is perfect for this low cost, high bandwidth symmetric service.
